In 1800, when the federal government moved there, the city experienced initially modest growth. Despite its strong symbolic value, it was almost completely destroyed by the British during the War of 1812, with the Capitol being almost reduced to ashes. After peace was restored in 1815, Congress hesitated for a long time before financing the reconstruction.

During the first half of the 19th century, Washington, D.C. went through a period of growth and expansion. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the city was burned by British troops. However, it was quickly rebuilt, and new iconic buildings were added to its landscape, such as the Capitol and the White House.

During the 19th century, Washington, D.C. became a significant location for the civil rights movement and the struggle for racial equality. In 1865, at the end of the Civil War, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, officially abolishing slavery throughout the country.

In the early 20th century, Washington, D.C. experienced significant urban expansion. Many iconic government buildings were constructed, including the Library of Congress, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. The city also modernized its infrastructure, adding new bridges, avenues, and parks.
