It was founded in January 1791, on the banks of the Potomac River, near the cities of Georgetown and Alexandria. It was named in honor of the first President of the United States, George Washington.

Despite its strong symbolic value, it was almost completely destroyed by the British during the War of 1812, with the Capitol being almost reduced to ashes. After peace was restored in 1815, Congress hesitated for a long time before financing the reconstruction.

During the first half of the 19th century, Washington, D.C. went through a period of growth and expansion. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the city was burned by British troops. However, it was quickly rebuilt, and new iconic buildings were added to its landscape, such as the Capitol and the White House.
