The Great Blue Hole
Belize offers one of the most popular diving destinations, the Great Blue Hole. This vast underwater chasm located near the lighthouse reef offers diverse and interesting observations of limestone formations which shape its walls. The deeper you dive into the Great Blue Hole, the clearer the water and the more breathtaking the landscapes. The bizarre stalactites and limestone formations become more and more complex and intense.
Caracol
Located on the Vodka Plateau 500 meters above sea level, Caracol is the largest Mayan site in Belize. It was once one of the largest ancient Mayan cities, covering approximately 168 square kilometers at its peak. Caracol's largest pyramid, Canaa, measures 43 meters and remains the tallest structure ever built in all of Belize.
Placencia
Placencia, a popular peninsula in southern Belize, offers the best mainland beaches and some of the most incredible coral reefs. Inside the Placencia Peninsula is a long, expansive white sand beach. With its stunning beaches and many affordable accommodation options, it's a great place to relax and one of Belize's must-see attractions.
Lamanai
Located in northern Belize, Lamanai was once a large Mayan city. The ancient ruins are not fully revealed, but archaeological work has focused on the investigation and restoration of the most important structures, such as the Main Temple, which is 33 meters high. Lamanai, meaning submerged crocodile in Mayan, is one of the few Mayan sites to retain its traditional name.
San Pedro
San Pedro is the largest island among hundreds of islands located in the northernmost waters of Belize. It is Belize's premier tourist destination, offering a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere without large hotels or heavy city traffic. Most people get around San Pedro on foot, and many of the island's resorts are within a mile of town.
Coxcomb Basin Wildlife Area
Coxcomb Basin Wildlife Reserve is one of Belize's largest protected destinations. Founded in 1990 as the first nature reserve for jaguars, it is home to approximately 60 of Belize's 700 jaguars. Although your chances of seeing one are slim, it is an ideal environment for observing plants, birds and other animals. The trail system is very well developed compared to other protected areas in Belize.
Xunantunich
The Xunantunich Mayan ruins are located atop a ridge above the Mopan River near San Ignacio, close to the border with Guatemala. Most structures date from 200 to 900 BC. Xunantunich consists of six squares surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces. The pyramid called El Castillo is the tallest structure in Xunantunich, measuring 40 meters.
Belize Zoo
Nestled in a natural forest 31 miles from Belize City, Belize Zoo is one of the best zoos in the Americas. Many of the animals in this zoo are wild animals that have been kept as pets by individuals. The zoo is working to rehabilitate these animals to release them into the wild. It allows visitors to see Belize's native animals up close, in spacious enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats.
Ambergris Caye
As the largest cay island in Belize, Ambergris offers many things to do. Whether you want to relax in a hammock on a beautiful beach, fish, sail, or take a food tour, you'll find something for everyone on Ambergris Caye. The main town of San Pedro, with its beachfront hotels and operators offering excursions to the Great Blue Hole and Shark Ray Alley, is a good starting point for visitors.
Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is a small coral island in the Caribbean Sea, accessible by fast water taxi or small plane. In recent years, the island has become a popular tourist attraction in Belize due to its affordable prices, relaxed atmosphere, numerous restaurants and bars. The main mode of transportation on Caye Caulker is simply walking, the trails are well defined and it takes around 20 minutes to cross the island. Bicycles and golf carts can also be rented.
